We took off from Seattle at 9 am Sunday morning, August 23rd and about 10 hours later we landed in Misawa AFB, Japan on Monday, August 24 at 10 am. The kids all did fantastic on the flight. It was a long flight and we didn't know how well we all would handle it. Nobody got sick and we all slept really well, with the exception of Cole. He could sleep, he was enjoying all the airplane food and watching all the movies they showed on the flight.
After getting our bags and getting our passports and papers all checked over, we were picked up by our sponsors. John and Ashley Gerhauser, were our contacts to help us through this whole PCS.(Permanent Change of Station)
They took us to the on base hotel and helped us get started on getting set up here on base. They gave us some food(the commissary is closed on Mondays), took us to get our house, post office box, and everything else we had to get done right after we landed.
The first week was really overwhelming. We land, then its....Ready....Set....GO! Get Kevin checked in, get your house, your car, your kids registered in school, and much much more.
We had to take a driving test the second day in Japan so we could get a car and show that we could drive on the left side of the road and know the Japanese road signs.
An unexpected blow was that our unaccompanied baggage (air shipment) that was supposed to meet us here, didn't. It was sent wrong from Bowling AFB and is taking 3-4 weeks longer than planned. Which means it could take longer than all our stuff coming on the slow boat across the ocean. That news hit us all very hard. I didn't handle it very well, I went through all the stages of grief for about two hours. Kevin and I took a drive, I got all my feelings all out, and then we went to the BX. We bought all the things we needed that should have come in our shipment. We are trying to make the best out of it with happy attitudes and trying to be patient. It's not easy when you don't have your stuff for over 2 months and still living with the stuff we packed in our suit cases.
The kids needed to get out of the hotel.
We took a walk around base while Kevin was in processing.
